WSJ interviews Dee Leopold HBS admits more engineers

Harvard Business School Todays Wall St. Journal provides an excellent interview with Dee Leopold, Director of Admission at Harvard Business School. A few highlights: WSJ: Ms. Leopold personally reads applications for the 1,800 candidates invited to interview. About half of those are accepted. Dee Leopold: Sometimes the challenge in the essays is to be honest and to be clear. It may be helpful for someone to say, I have no idea what youre talking about. De-jargonizing is helpful. Dee Leopold: The best recommendations have a lot of verbs. They say, She did this, versus adjectives that simply describe you. (LA: Same is true of MBA essays and interview responses.) Dee Leopold:   We like to think that our arrogance detectors are pretty good. Were looking for confidence, with humility. Dee Leopold: I do see more people coming from entrepreneurial backgrounds, and we have more engineers. Comparing A P And Barn Burning - 1230 Words

To begin, I will talk about the similarities between â€Å"AP† and â€Å"Barn Burning.† â€Å"AP† takes place at a normal grocery store in which many people dress properly. One day, three teenage girls walk into this store wearing nothing but bathing suits. The story concentrates around the thoughts Sammy, the cashier, has while watching these girls. When the girls come to check out in Sammy’s lane, the manager notices their attire and makes his way over to where the three girls are. Lengel, the manager, criticizes the girls for what they are wearing. As the girls begin to leave the store, Sammy suddenly turns to Lengel and quits his job. Sammy secretly hopes the girls are watching him and will consider him their hero; however, the girls are gone and did not notice his attempt at a heroic act. The manager tries to talk Sammy out of quitting, but Sammy feels that he must go through with his impromptu decision. At the end of the story, Sammy exists the store alone and with an ambiguous felling that life would still be hard to him afterward. Another connection that these two stories have is that they both begin in a very similar setting. â€Å"AP†, takes place in a local grocery store. This evidence is found when John Updike writes that â€Å"the sheep pushing their carts down the isle-against the unusual flow of traffic- were pretty hilarious† (Mays p.149). Arab – Israeli wars have dominated the Middle East for over 30 years ever since Israel became an independent state. Starting with the first Arab – Israeli war in 1948 to the most recent war, the Yom Kippur war in 1973, and possible wars and conflicts in the future. In order to better predict future confrontations it is important, for us as a military, to understand the implications and consequences of these wars. To understand the rise in tensions between Israel and the Arab world we must go back to the beginning when Israel first became a state. In November of 1947, the UN adopted UN Resolution 181 that broke up Great Britain’s former Palestinian mandate into Jewish and Arab states in May of the following year. At the time†¦show more content†¦At the time Israel, was looking to overthrow the Egyptian President and with secret meetings with Great Britain and France, set out to attack on 29 October 1957. Marching across the Sinai Peninsula and reachi ng within 10 miles of the canal, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) halted their advance when French and British paratroopers deployed to the canal in an effort to protect it from belligerents (Israel and Egypt) on 31 October. The French, British and Israeli forces in secret meetings held previously to the engagement preplanned this staging of their forces in order to keep control of the canal. On November 6th the United Nations passes another resolution for a ceasefire. The land held at the time of the ceasefire by Israel is slowly handed back over the years leading up to the 6 day War in 1967. In the middle of May 1967, Egypt takes drastic action based on false reports provided by the Soviets. The reports claim that Israel is massing troops along the Egyptian and Syrian borders. In response, Egypt closes the Straits of Tiran, the only waterway between the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea. Israel sees this as an act of war and on June 5th launches attacks against Egypt, Syria, and Jord an. By June 10th, when an armistice was signed Israel only suffered 115 dead while the combined number of losses for Egypt, Syria and Jordan totaled more than 17,000. I, and many others, extremely disagree with the current filthiness of school foods that are provided regularly; therefore, the food conditions must be improved. Inside your body, the chemicals clog your blood vessels; ravage your heart, liver and kidney. Their purpose is to subjugate your body and mind. The store of toxic substances inside a teenage body will cause diseases when they grow older. Moreover, the annual statistics show extremely high expenses acquired to purchase hospital necessities. Not only does it come at the cost of so much money, it comes at an irreplaceable cost of lives. Furthermore, the companies that provide such foods do not care of you or your familys health. Clearly, it is conspicuous that school foods are worthless garbage and we need actions to stop it now. In a world, where obesity and hypertension becomes one of more frequent issues; the studies show that high consummation of calories and cholesterol are harmful. The adequate amount of calories for maintaining your body healthy is about 1400 cal. a day. Every student pays two dollars to receive a regular lunch, which consists of a main food, drinks and fries. These yellow grease compacts, which people call fries are an abundant source of cholesterol and calories. In a single meal, you can easily obtain, say, about 1100 cal. This abnormal in-take of these chemicals can prove to be very unhealthy to your body. Yet, obstinate thoughts deter you from restriction of consuming these substances. Before you realize the pitiful condition of your body, the grease rapidly flows into your blood stream. The liver, heart and many more essential organs will be quickly overflowed with indescribable filth. The increase of blood pressure, and the livers being destroyed are the factors that render catastrophic results. Compelled by greed, the people who provide school food care nothing of students health. All they are concerned with is to become rich. Who are they to think of themselves as such important figures prior to human beings health? They are, by all means, worthy of the tiniest respect. Take fries as an example of their flawless work. The oils are filthy and when you bite into those fries, the grease oozes out into your mouth. Talking about fries, how will you ever find out that the potatoes have been dropped on the ground or started to grow mold a couple weeks ago? It is truly ridiculous and I condemn to any furthermore consuming of such work of filth and despicable greed. Each year, as many as a million lives are taken away by ruthless beings called heart attacks. Heart attacks, although theyre common due to recent drastic increase of abomination, arent unavoidable. The disaster doesnt strike randomly to people they choose. They have a simple cause. Quiet obviously, our body is vulnerable and more than anything, you must obtain foods carefully. People are careless and carelessness is death. Thats what provokes heart attacks; the arteries gradually becoming like streets of New York City because of cholesterol. Why cant we simply overcome our arrogance and admit that our foods are 100% crap? If you admit it, at least it wont kill you. A large percentage of the surgeries fail as much as they succeed, causing loss of loved family members. The body itself suffers. Pain flows through your arms and legs like electricity moves through water. Then your heartbeat will come to a sudden stop instantly leaving you full of painful regrets and despair. If one/tenth or even one/thousandth of 125 billion dollars were used to improve the school food, you wouldnt be dead. In fact, youd be out on the green field, full of vivacious spirit and valor. Doesnt the fact that all you value, all your possessions, and money will be gone, trigger a call for better foods? Ultimately, the toxicants can decimate your health. Moreover, people who caused such pain do not care at all.
